Kitesurf and the beaches of Isla Canela: the ideal combination

If you are looking for an adventure that combines water sports with direct contact with the sea and nature, kitesurfing emerges as the activity of choice. Kitesurfing, which has gained popularity all over the world, attracts enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels, offering a unique experience of interaction with water and wind.

Kitesurf: What is kitesurfing?

Kitesurf, also known as kiteboarding, is an activity that fuses the skill of surfing with the power of the wind. This sport is practised on a board while being dragged by a kite, which is controlled by the athlete using a bar. Within kitesurfing there are different modalities, such as freestyle, where jumps and tricks are performed; wave riding, which involves surfing waves; and hydrofoil, which allows you to rise above the water thanks to a hydrodynamic keel.

The fascinating thing about kitesurfing is that, although it can be advantageous to have waves, flat water is often preferred, a situation that is perfectly suited to Isla Canela, especially in the lagoon areas at low tide. The feeling of speed and freedom you will experience when gliding over the water is incomparable, making every session an exciting and exhilarating adventure.

Climate conditions

Isla Canela stands out as a favourite destination for kitesurfing enthusiasts, thanks to its ideal climatic and geographical conditions that favour the practice of this sport all year round. The best time to enjoy kitesurfing in Isla Canela is from May to September, a period during which you can experience the pure essence of this water sport thanks to the constant and gentle winds that blow from the ocean. This wind, known in the area as the poniente, is particularly appreciated by kitesurfers for its constancy and smoothness, making it easier to learn and control the kite more efficiently.

Isla Canela’s unique location, close to the Guadiana River, enriches the experience by offering sandy shallows with shallow water, perfect for free styling and for beginners to take their first steps in safety. In addition, those in search of more adrenaline can venture into areas with waves, broadening the possibilities for sailing and practice. The westerly wind ensures stable and pleasant sailing, turning every session in Isla Canela into an exhilarating adventure.

Large, uncrowded areas

The wide expanse of Isla Canela’s beach means that there are generous riding areas available, giving kitesurfers the space they need to explore and enjoy the sport freely and without restriction. To ensure the safety of all participants, certain areas of the beach have been specifically designated for kitesurfing.

During the high season, from 15th June to 15th September, kitesurfing is restricted to a specially designated area, located on San Bruno Beach, where our school is also located. Outside this area and period, kiters can enjoy the entire length of the beach, except in the areas reserved for sailing boats, which are delimited by a line of yellow buoys parallel to the coast.

Accessing these boating areas requires passing through nautical channels, which can be a challenge for beginners. It is important to respect these time and space restrictions to avoid significant fines and to ensure safe and respectful kitesurfing in Isla Canela.
