Although still in a process of constant improvement, Isla Canela’s links golf course has already gained international recognition. In addition to its presence on the Alps Tour and DP World Tour (Q-School – Stage 2), it has been included in the prestigious list of the 100 best golf resorts in continental Europe, reflecting its evolution and potential as a course in an undiscovered destination.
This links golf course offers a unique experience in Southern Europe with 18 holes, par 72. Recently redesigned, the course is over 6,600 metres long, stretching along the left bank of the Guadiana River, with sweeping views towards the mouth of the river and the Portuguese Algarve. Although its gentle topography makes it easy to play on foot, the wind, large bunkers and undulating greens demand precision and constant strategy.
Although it is a more recent addition to the competitive circuit, the Isla Canela golf course has already gained international recognition. In addition to its presence on the Alps Tour and the DP World Tour, it has been included in the prestigious list of the 100 best golf resorts in continental Europe, a reflection of its evolution and potential as a venue for major golfing events.
Par 5
One for the brave, but it bites back if not cautious. Hazard on the right and a small river dividing the fairway, around 100m from the green. If you can carry the right-side hill, there's a risky chance of reaching the green in 2.
VIEW MAPPar 4
Tee shot plays a major role. Going too far right of the fairway might be enough to let the ball roll off and into the hazard. Get the right shape of a draw and settle yourself in a good position to attack the green.
VIEW MAPPar 3
Shortest hole on the course, with a 'rollercoaster' of a green to back it up. Putting upwards is key on this tricky par 3, depending where the flag is.
VIEW MAPPar 4
A technical hole where the accurate strikers strive. You want to hit the fairway, otherwise you will be facing a very tough 2nd shot from either a bunker on the left or hazard on both sides.
VIEW MAPPar 4
Wind is key here. Tee boxes are sitting high, so you must balance out power and control if you want a safe blast off. Avoid hitting it to the right of the flag. Left is always best on this green.
VIEW MAPPar 4
A reachable par 4. If your carry is long enough to carry the bunker, you will be set for an easy birdie chance. Depends on how good your short game is.
VIEW MAPPar 3
Always an extra club more than what you might think it's enough. Usually, it's a right to left type of shot you would want to go for here. Study the wind well.
VIEW MAPPar 5
A short fun par 5, but it can destroy your result if taken lightly. Players can cut quite a bit with a good slice shaped shot and reduce the distance massively between themselves and the green.
VIEW MAPPar 4
A slight dog-leg right uphill hole. Targeting the last bunker on the left will be sufficient, but if you fancy a shorter distance 2nd shot, aim for the few trees on the right side of the fairway.
VIEW MAPPar 4
Begin the back nine of the course with this eye opening par 4. The further you hit the fairway the better. Due to the fact that there is a river and hazard defending the front and right side of the green.
VIEW MAPPar 4
True test for anyone who has yet to experience a Links course. Looks can be misleading. A wide and open fairway means nothing when the wind arrives. It can help you or hurt you.
VIEW MAPPar 3
Tricky par 3 with a big bunker protecting the right side of the green and on the left, a hazard extending alongside the river Guadiana. A safe shot with an extra club might come in handy.
VIEW MAPPar 4
Decently sized par 4 with a few bunkers protecting along its way up until this pedestal shaped green. Add height and spin to the ball to avoid being short or rolling over the green.
VIEW MAPPar 3
The flag position is what dictates your type of shot because this stylish green is strategically well guarded by two bunkers. Use the wind to your advantage.
VIEW MAPPar 5
One of the best looking holes on the course, this par 5 is an uphill opportunity for a low number score. Avoid the trees on the right, they can sabotage your way back onto the fairway.
VIEW MAPPar 4
Highest point of the course. Dog-leg right with nicely shaped bunkers on its left side. Players would do well in missing them. Cut the corner. The stronger the strike, the more you can cut.
VIEW MAPPar 4
A well designed hole in the shape of a snake. If you slice it too much and go right, don't worry, it's pretty clear out there unless the ball sits behind a tree.
VIEW MAPPar 5
Dog-leg left par 5 where players can cut the corner quite a bit. The buggy path is a good reference point for the limit. The green is shielded by a bunker on its front left side and one at the back.
